1. Part ll. Olympism & Olympic Values.
[edit]

Today, we will be sharing about the Olympism & Olympic Values.
-----------------------------
OLYMPISM

Ancient Olympism
Olympism has its roots in the beliefs of the ancient Greeks, who encouraged people to develop their physical, moral, intellectual, cultural and artistic qualities harmoniously. This meant taking part in a blend of sport, art, educational and cultural activities. This philosophy was celebrated through the Olympic Games, a festival involving athletes, scholars and artists from many cultural fields.

Modern Olympism
The Olympic Movement is established in 1894 by Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin ; the father of modern olympism. He modernised ancient Greek ideals and launched them to the rest of the world through the process of a modern Olympic Games. By blending sport with culture and education, Olympism promotes a way of life based on:
*The balanced development of the body, will and mind
*The joy found in effort
*The educational value of being a good role model
*Respect for universal ethics including tolerance, generosity, unity, friendship, non-discrimination and respect for others.

Goal of Olympism
Olympism uses sport to promote the balanced development of people as an necessary step in building a peaceful society that places a high value on human dignity.

The Olympic Movement should evaluate :
*whether the Olympic Games still help to promote the Olympic ideals
*whether the Olympic values continue to contribute to the success of the Olympic Games.

OLYMPIC VALUES

5 main olympics values:
*Excellence: Doing the best we can, on the field of play or in our daily life activities. The important point is not winning, but taking part, making progress and enjoying the healthy combination of body, mind and will.
*Friendship: At the heart of the Olympic Movement. It encourages us to see sport as an instrument for mutual understanding between individuals, and communication between people all over the world.
*Respect: Respecting others, yourself and your body, for other people, rules
and regulations, sports and for the environment.
*Determination: Strive till the end, not only in the competetition but in all the things that we do in our daily life. Determination is the key to success.
*Sportsmanship: Enjoying the process competition, not the results. Fairplays during and being a 'good loser' are examples of good sportsmanship.
